Chile proved itself as unbeatable yet again. In a first, Unbeatable Chile – Copa America 2016 defeated Argentina in Copa America finals. Before this, Chile has never defeated Argentina in open play in twenty seven Copa America encounters in a span of almost hundred years. However, in the past twelve months, they have dashed to the ground, hopes of Lionel Messi’s team. They won the much coveted Copa America 2016 and bagged the prestigious trophy. It is after this victory of Chile that Lionel Messi decided to retire from international football. This is the second of Chile on penalties against its Trans Andrean rivals. This final victory of Chile has cemented it as one of the best teams in the world.
UNBEATABLE CHILE – COPA AMERICA 2016
Another irony is that the landmark event which has transformed the geography and history of team Chile is the visionary appointment of Marcelo Bielsa in the year 2007. He has become the cult figure in Chile. Diego Latorre, who was in the Argentinian team that won the Copa America in Chile in the year 1991, said that Chile has become extremely audacious in a manner that it can impose itself on any field. It has designed itself as to overcome any kind of obstacles and adversaries. This fact would not have been true prior to the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa. Argentina faced a very humiliating defeat to Chile in Santiago last year. They have managed to defeat them twice this year. But this final match could not bear the fruits for them.
Argentina is the number one team in the world and boasts of its one of the best players in the world, Lionel Messi. Despite being that top notch team, it is still waiting for their major trophy since 1993. Lep often looked cut off from his own team at a packed Metlife in East Rutherford. He looked even more cut and dejected at the end after his miss of penalty and amid Chile’s victory celebrations. Two successive failures against Chile seem to have taken a toll on him. This very toll is forcing him to turn a blind eye to all the achievements he has made in his football career. Messi is the same man who led Argentina to the title at World Youth Championship in 2005 and led Argentina to Gold medal at Beijing Olympic Games 2008. He is the same man who scored 4 goals in World Cup in Brazil. Hence he was awarded with the Golden Ball for the best player of the Tournament. And this golden footballer has now announced his retirement from international football. Huge loss for the Argentinian team!
Earlier, Bielsa was the coach of Argentinian team since 1999 to 2004. On joining as the coach of team Chile, Bielsa revolutionized Chile’s training tactics and methods and led them to the World Cup 2010 in South Africa after being absent from the tournament since the year 1998. Jorge Sampaoli along with Bielsa were instrumental in developing and enhancing forward Alexis Sanchez and midfielder Arturo Vidal as top notch and world class players. Claudio Bravo has also emerged as the top notch goalkeeper under their guidance. Sampaoli steered Chile to the 16th round in Brazil. He also masterminded their Copa America success a year ago. Until 2008, Argentina had never lost a competitive match to Chile. Argentina had also beaten the team now coached by Juan Antonio twice in last three months. The first victory was in a World Cup qualifier in Santiago in the month of March. The second one being their opening game of this very tournament in Santa Clara. The latter happened just three weeks ago. Both the times the victory was for 2-1.
