Serena – the voracious tennis star one of them a battle hardened veteran and other a teen – played terrific game at SW19 on a cold Tuesday afternoon. They finished on different sides of scoreline in their respective first match but somehow they managed to prove that winning is much more than giving the result. Eighteen year old Taylor Fritz, who is at number 65 in the rankings this week, is the youngest in top hundred of ATP world rankings. He fought to the end against Stan Wawrinka but much to his dismay, he could not stand out as a winner. Fritz, who is 6 feet 4 inches, displayed great spirit and tennis prowess, refusing to succumb to seasoned World number 5. Finally, he lost the four sets with a 6-7(4), 1-6, 7-6(2) and 4-6. The fact that he put up a great battle against the opponent is a proof that he is here to stay in attendance and not to go back home. Wawrinka, who recently turned 31 on Tuesday, in a statement said that the kid would be the future of Tennis. He said, “I have practised with him in past. He is good with a big serve and big back hand. It will be interesting to see how he comes along.” Taylor will now face the former US Open Champion, Juan Martin, who bet Stephane Robert with 6-1, 7-5 and 6-0.
Serena – the voracious tennis star
In the meanwhile, World’s number 1, Serena Williams, powered to the finish against Amra Sadikovic. Intense and passionate Serena defeated Sadikovic with 6-2 and 6-4. Sadikovic is the comeback tennis girl from Switzerland. Having lost the tennis charm, the girl took to coaching before reinventing her spark. She tried her level best but ultimately succumbed to the six-time champion. The twenty one time Grand Slam champion, striving hard for that record breaking number 22, seemed to have more problem with her dress than with the opponent. Distressing, right? She had put on something from the Nike collection- a layered frock with tight torso. She struggled hard for 73 minutes she spent on the ground. Seems that such an airy ensemble is just not her cup of tea. Each time she served, the dress also hopped and skipped with her. But the champion hotly argued that this airy effect was due to the strong winds. Her dress is not to be blamed. We can understand that there might just be no problem with her outfit as Serena is herself a designer. She won’t deliberately put on anything which may turn the tide against her.
She will now be facing Christina McHale who happens to be her compatriot. Christina earlier put out the wildcard entrant , Daniels with a 7-5 and 6-2. Selena is now only one tournament short of the record breaking Steffi Graf’s total of 22 Slams. However, Serena said that this 22 figure record is not her major concern. She argued that earlier she had thought of winning the Australian Open and the French Open but luck just did not favored her. She naturally thought of winning Wimbledon but she necessarily does not think of nailing the 22 match mark. She said that she had her own mental lows because of these failures but ultimately nothing is mentally too hard for her. Now that is what we call display of courage, right?
In other first round matches, Andy Murray bet Liam Broady with a 6-2, 6-3 and a 6-4. The twelfth seeded Frenchman Jo Wilfried knocked out Inigo Cervantes with a 6-4 and a 7-6. Nick Kyrgios who is the 15th seed , pulled past Czech Radek Stepnek. He scored a 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 and 6-1.
