Athletics is one of the most famous sports at a worldwide level Is it necessary for professional athletes to take drug test before the game. An athlete is known to have qualities like determination, discipline, time management, emotional maturity, social connectedness and peer acceptance among others. But nowadays due to abuse of drugs by elite or amateur athletes, the above mentioned qualities of an athlete becomes in vain. The ‘to excel or to be on top at any cost’ mentality of athletes is pervading due to which they are coerced to use drugs (steroids).
People have different perspectives about usage of drugs, many of them think the usage of drugs like steroids in athletics is beneficial as these drugs enhances strength, muscle mass and allows them to work out more frequently and harder without over straining. They just think that use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes are just like the usage of ropes, crampons, etc. by mountaineers for climbing, but that does not justify the social injustice it does to an ordinary law abiding athlete. The reasons why drug-using athletes should be tested before their game are innumerous. Any athlete is risking his/her health in the long run by using drugs just for the sake of short term success in any competition. The drug test before the game not only ensures that the game is fair, but it also looks out for the safety and health of athletes as using drugs can cause several health diseases including liver damage.
Is it necessary for professional athletes to take drug test before the game
Just because an athlete wants to showcase better performances at any event or competition, use of drugs by them can’t be justified. Use of performance-enhancing drugs by elite athletes has a negative impact on society. Elite athletes are role models for a large number of young athletes. Young athletes always consider the elite athlete’s achievements as their inspiration. So when their role models itself are tested positive in a drug test, they take it as permission for themselves to use drugs like steroids by their role models. Drug-abusing athletes expose themselves and society to an environment of doped sports; hence they should be tested before the games and banned from the sports association as it prevents a sufficient amount of people from being harmed.
Skill, strategy, hard work, and effort should play a central role in an athlete’s success but nowadays instead of these qualities drugs have become the significant factor for success. The abuse of drugs replaces the role of skill with drug-induced brute, strength and endurance. In this case, the potency of drugs becomes a critical parameter of winning.
If drug-using athletes are not tested, maybe there will not be any situation of competitive inferiority when every athlete starts using drugs to enhance their performance. The amount of drugs used by athletes goes on increasing. Then there will be a condition when the amount of drugs used by them will reach its peak and will cause severe damage to their health. The use of drugs is not accidental, it is planned and the sole reason behind its use is to get unfair advantage in a competition. When a fully trained elite athlete uses drugs, their performance increases to a great extent; this creates a gap between them and law-abiding athletes, whose performances in a competition are reflections of their God-given talents, hard work, dedication and efforts.
So use of drugs in athletics is equal to cheating and impugning to the integrity of the competition and the sportsman’s accomplishment. So in order to protect the right of an athlete to participate in a fair competition and to promote equality and fairness for all athletes, professional athletes should take drug tests before the game.
